Gandhinagar, June 6 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Gujarat government on Saturday appointed Ahmedabad Police Commissioner Gyanender Singh Malik as the new Director General and Inspector General of Police (DGP) of the state, filling the vacant top post in the police hierarchy with immediate effect.
In a notification issued by the Home Department, the government stated: “Gyanender Singh Malik, IPS (GJ:1993), Commissioner of Police, Ahmedabad City, is appointed on the vacant cadre post of Director General and Inspector General of Police, Gujarat State with immediate effect.”
Malik, a 1993-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Gujarat cadre, succeeds the interim arrangement under senior IPS officer K. L. N. Rao, who had been holding charge of the post after the retirement of former DGP Vikas Sahay at the end of 2025.
With more than three decades of service, Malik is among the most senior officers in the Gujarat cadre.
Originally from Haryana, he joined the IPS in January 1994 and holds degrees in engineering and law.
He has previously served in a range of key policing and administrative positions in Gujarat and at the Centre.
Before taking over as Ahmedabad Police Commissioner in July 2023, he served on central deputation with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) as Additional Director General (North).
His appointment as Ahmedabad Police Commissioner came as part of a major reshuffle of senior IPS officers in Gujarat in 2023.
During his career, Malik has been awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2010 and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2017.
He has also held leadership roles within the state police fraternity and was elected president of the Gujarat IPS Officers’ Association earlier this year.
The appointment places Malik at the helm of Gujarat Police at a time when the force oversees policing in one of India’s most industrialised states, with responsibilities ranging from law and order and crime investigation to internal security and major public events.
According to official service records, he is due to retire in November 2028, giving him a tenure of more than two years as the state’s police chief.
