Govt using police against critics, not focussed on law & order in Tamil Nadu: DMK's Elangovan

Chennai, May 26 (SocialNews.XYZ) The DMK on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the Tamil Nadu government over the recent stabbing of a 14-year-old boy in Chennai, alleging misuse of the police machinery and deterioration of law and order in the state.

Speaking to IANS, DMK spokesperson T.K.S. Elangovan alleged that the police were being diverted towards addressing criticism against the government rather than maintaining public safety.

"They are engaged in other work. They are misusing the police for their personal purposes. Today I saw that Mukhtar, a YouTuber, and his family were taken to a police station. They concentrate on people who criticise them, not on the law-and-order situation. That is the trend today," Elangovan claimed.

He further alleged that police action was selective. "This government is not for the people. If anything happens personally to the Chief Minister, the police take immediate action. But the police are not there for the common man. That is why such incidents are happening," he said.

Elangovan also accused political parties and civil society of maintaining silence over the incident while drawing a comparison with previous administrations.

"If this had happened during the DMK's tenure, everybody would have raised their voice. But now everyone is silent. Only our Leader of Opposition, Udhayanidhi Stalin is speaking about these incidents. He has listed how many crimes and murders have taken place, but nobody else speaks about it," he added.

On a separate issue, Elangovan reiterated the DMK's opposition to the proposed Mekedatu dam project and said actor-politician Chief Minister Vijay should use any meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to press Tamil Nadu's concerns.

"We have opposed Mekedatu. It is for CM Vijay to take action against it. If he is going to meet the Prime Minister, he should come out successfully. That is our wish," Elangovan said.
