Guwahati, May 18 (SocialNews.XYZ) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said the state government is closely monitoring market prices and will not allow any unfair increase in the cost of essential commodities, directing officials across districts to take stringent action against violators.
In a post on X, Sarma said the government and administration are keeping “a close eye on the market” to ensure stability in prices and protect consumers from abnormal escalation.
“Our Govt and administration is keeping a close eye on the market and will not allow any unfair price rise,” the Chief Minister posted.
“I have instructed officials in every district to keep a tab on prices of items and take stringent actions against any defaulter,” he added.
According to a senior government official, the Chief Minister on Monday reviewed the state’s price monitoring mechanism for essential commodities and directed officials to intensify surveillance and enforcement measures across Assam.
During the review meeting, Sarma instructed Deputy Commissioner-led District Monitoring Committees to convene meetings within the next three to four days to assess the prevailing market situation and ensure compliance with government directives.
The Chief Minister also directed authorities to make the display of retail and wholesale prices mandatory at all shops and wholesale outlets to maintain transparency and prevent arbitrary pricing practices.
Officials said Sarma warned that strict action would be taken against traders found indulging in abnormal price hikes, including cancellation of trade licences in serious cases.
The state government has also asked Deputy Commissioners to hold weekly review meetings with chambers of commerce and trade bodies to regularly assess market trends and address grievances related to pricing and supply of essential commodities.
Further, the Chief Minister directed officials to undertake intensive field-level monitoring to detect and prevent unusual price escalation in local markets.
In another key direction, Sarma asked officials to expedite Aadhaar seeding of beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana to eliminate duplicity in LPG cylinder distribution and ensure that benefits reach genuine consumers.
The government said the measures are aimed at maintaining market stability, checking profiteering and ensuring uninterrupted availability of essential goods for the public.
