Bengal Assembly elections results: Kolkata Police warn of legal action for sharing fake social media posts

Kolkata, May 5 (SocialNews.XYZ) Kolkata Police on Tuesday warned of legal action against anyone sharing fake or unrelated posts on social media to create unrest in the city post the declaration of West Bengal Assembly elections results.

In a post on X, Kolkata Police said: "Several misleading posts are being circulated on social media by falsely linking unrelated videos and photos from other places to Kolkata after the election results. Kolkata Police is closely monitoring such content. Strict legal action is being taken against those spreading misinformation and attempting to disturb public peace."

The police further said that the situation in the city is under control and asked people to refrain from sharing such posts. "The situation in Kolkata is fully under control. Citizens are requested not to believe or share unverified posts," read the post.

The move from Kolkata Police came after several photos and videos were doing the rounds on social media, which claimed incidents of violence taking place in and around the city after the West Bengal Assembly elections results were declared.

After a decade and a half, there has been another political change in the state. The BJP has come to power by bringing down the Trinamool Congress government. The party won 207 seats in the 294-seat Assembly, while the Trinamool’s seats have come down to 80 from 215 it won in 2021.

A day after the BJP stormed into power in West Bengal, security outside outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's residence was reduced on Tuesday morning. Only a few policemen have been stationed outside her ancestral house at 30B, Harish Chatterjee Street. Even after her party's electoral debacle in and her own defeat from Bhabanipur constituency, Banerjee has yet to tender her resignation as Chief Minister.
