Kolkata, April 28 (SocialNews.XYZ) A Trinamool Congress worker in Halisahar in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district was shot at by bike-borne masked miscreants, said the police on Tuesday.

Trinamool has directly accused the BJP of attacking its worker. Prosenjit Maulik alias Raja was seriously injured in the shootout on the last day of campaigning.

He has been admitted to the Kalyani JNM Hospital in a critical condition. There has been intense tension over this incident before the second phase of voting on Wednesday.

A large police force has rushed to the spot after receiving the news. The reason for this incident is still not clear. An investigation into the incident has already started. A vigorous search has been started to find the miscreants who were responsible for the shooting.

According to the police, Trinamool worker Raja, a resident of Khasbati North Road, was standing on the roadside on Misri Pukur Road in Ward No. 9 of Halishahar on Monday night when some masked miscreants on a bike opened fire at him. A total of three rounds of shots were fired at him.

It is learnt that one bullet hit Raja in the stomach, and the other two bullets hit the mobile phone in his pocket. After that, the Trinamool worker fell, and the locals rescued him and took him to Kalyani JNM Hospital.

The political tension in the area intensified after the incident.

Bijpur Trinamool candidate Subodh Adhikari claimed, "This is the culture of the BJP. This attack was carried out by miscreants out of fear of their impending defeat."

However, BJP candidate Sudipta Das dismissed the allegations and said, "The miscreants in the area are Trinamool supporters. It is not known why the incident happened. It could also be due to the Trinamool's own conflict."

The police said that an investigation into the incident has been launched. A search is underway to find the attackers.

As many as 142 constituencies will go to the polls on Wednesday in the second and final phase of the Assembly elections in West Bengal. Counting of votes will be held on May 4.
