Jaideep Ahlawat Says Actors Are No Longer Pigeonholed In Modern Cinema

Actor Jaideep Ahlawat, known for his intense and versatile performances, believes that the industry is finally moving towards a more liberating space for performers. Speaking on the sidelines of the launch of Mafia Queens Of India by S Hussain Zaidi, the actor shared his thoughts on how the perception of actors and roles has evolved over time.

Addressing the shift in storytelling and casting, Jaideep highlighted how the industry is slowly breaking away from rigid stereotypes. He said, “In fact, what is happening—and this is actually a positive development—is that you are no longer pigeonholing actors into rigid categories. You aren't limiting them by saying, ‘They can only do this.’ Since they are actors, after all, it is far better for them to have the opportunity to portray diverse characters. Why should it be the case that an actor who started out in comedy is expected to perform only comedy roles forever? That wouldn't be fair to him or her, would it? It is simply better to... well, you know.”

His perspective reflects a broader change in the industry where actors are increasingly experimenting with roles across genres, moving beyond typecasting that once defined careers. For performers like Jaideep, this shift allows for deeper exploration and more meaningful storytelling.

When the conversation turned to the evolution of antagonists in cinema, Jaideep offered a more historical lens. Referencing films like Satya and Company, he explained, “It’s not just a recent phenomenon; it dates back to a very long time ago. From Satya to Company—the very concept of an 'antagonist' has existed in literature for ages. It hasn't just appeared in cinema recently; it has been a part of Indian cinema for a very long time—it’s not something that started just now.”

He further added that the conversation around villains and their portrayal often resurfaces without much change in perspective. “What often happens is that we tend to ask the same questions every five years. This very question regarding the 'glorification' of villains was raised five years ago as well; ten years ago, the same topic kept resurfacing repeatedly. And the answers to these points remain largely the same,” he said.

Jaideep also pointed out that while the presence of antagonists is not new, the depth with which they are written has evolved significantly over time. He cited films like Maqbool as examples of a phase where characters, especially antagonists, began to be explored with more nuance and complexity.

As cinema continues to evolve, voices like Jaideep Ahlawat’s underline the importance of creative freedom and layered storytelling. For actors, this changing landscape offers not just variety, but also the chance to redefine what it means to perform on screen.
