Darjeeling, April 17 (SocialNews.XYZ) In a unique and collaborative initiative to strengthen voter awareness and promote democratic participation, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), through its heritage line, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR), organised a “Mega SVEEP” programme on Friday.
NFR Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Kapinjal Kishore Sharma said that the railway zone, in partnership with the office of the District Election Officer, Darjeeling (West Bengal), conducted the “Mega SVEEP” (Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation) programme. The initiative aims to encourage informed, responsible and inclusive participation in the upcoming West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections.
He said that as part of the programme, a major phase of activities was hosted at the iconic Darjeeling Railway Station.
The station premises witnessed enthusiastic participation from railway officials, district authorities and members of the public, all united in promoting the importance of every vote in a vibrant democratic setup.
The event began with the arrival of distinguished guests, followed by a traditional welcome ceremony, including the offering of khada and the lighting of the ceremonial lamp, symbolising awareness and enlightenment among voters.
The programme was further enriched by a cultural performance presented by a Sherpa cultural team, reflecting the rich local heritage while reinforcing the spirit of civic responsibility, Sharma said.
He added that a signature campaign was also organised at the venue, drawing active participation from citizens and officials who pledged their commitment to ethical and informed voting.
The highlight of the event was the flagging off of the special “Democracy Express”, a dedicated DHR train carrying the message of voter awareness.
The train journey from Darjeeling to the iconic Batasia Loop symbolised the spread of democratic values across communities, effectively reaching both residents and tourists.
By leveraging the heritage and popularity of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, the initiative transformed a scenic journey into a powerful medium of public awareness.
The collaboration between NFR and the district election authorities underscores a shared commitment to ensuring maximum voter participation and strengthening the democratic fabric of the nation.
Northeast Frontier Railway remains committed to supporting national initiatives that promote public awareness, social responsibility and community engagement, the CPRO noted.
Meanwhile, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), headquartered at Maligaon near Guwahati, operates across the Northeastern states as well as in seven districts of West Bengal and five districts of north Bihar.
