Sometimes, Bollywood doesn’t need a grand idea—it just needs a toaster and a man obsessed enough to chase it. Toaster is one of those delightfully odd films that turns a ridiculously simple premise into a full-blown comedy of chaos, confusion, and character quirks.
Directed by Vivek Daschaudary, the film follows Ramakant, played by Rajkummar Rao, a miser so committed to saving money that even breathing probably feels like an expense to him. He runs a perfume shop and lives with his wife Shilpa, portrayed by Sanya Malhotra, in a society mostly populated by elderly residents. Life is simple—until a wedding invitation changes everything.
At the wedding of Shilpa’s guru’s daughter, Ramakant reluctantly agrees to attend, only to be horrified when Shilpa gifts the couple a brand-new toaster worth Rs. 5,000. For him, that’s not a gift—it’s a financial tragedy. But fate has a twisted sense of humor. When the marriage falls apart soon after, Ramakant sees an opportunity… to get his toaster back. And that’s where the madness truly begins.
Rajkummar Rao is the undisputed engine of Toaster. His comic timing is razor-sharp, and he fully leans into Ramakant’s miserly madness without holding back. What makes his performance work is consistency—his character doesn’t suddenly evolve or learn big lessons. Even after everything spirals out of control, Ramakant remains hilariously stubborn, making his journey even more entertaining.
On the other hand, Sanya Malhotra brings an entirely different flavor to the film. As someone obsessed with crime shows, she begins to treat real-life situations like a mystery waiting to be solved. Her attempt at playing detective adds a parallel layer of humor, often unintentionally funny and chaotic. Together, their dynamic creates a quirky rhythm that keeps the film engaging.
The supporting cast adds more spice to the madness. Archana Puran Singh stands out with a bizarre and unexpected character that catches you off guard in the best way. Upendra Limaye and the rest of the ensemble also contribute effectively, ensuring the world of Toaster feels lived-in and consistently amusing.
The film’s biggest strength lies in its premise—it’s weird, it’s fresh, and it has the potential to go completely wild. It reminds you of films like Monica O My Darling, where an unconventional idea is elevated by tight writing. Toaster gets the quirk right, but where it stumbles is in the screenplay. The first half sets up the madness beautifully, but the second half starts to feel repetitive, with situations not escalating as creatively as they could have.
Technically, the film does a decent job. Aman Pant’s music complements the tone without overpowering it, while cinematographer Jishnu Bhattacharjee captures the everyday setting with a neat, grounded approach. Editing by Chandrashekhar Prajapati is serviceable, though a tighter cut in the latter half could have made a big difference.
As a director, Vivek Daschaudary shows flashes of brilliance but doesn’t fully tap into the film’s chaotic potential. The story had all the ingredients to become a cult quirky comedy, but it settles for being intermittently funny instead of consistently outrageous.
In the end, Toaster is like a perfectly good joke that needed a stronger punchline. It has genuine laughs, a standout performance by Rajkummar Rao, and a premise that instantly hooks you. But it never fully becomes the crazy, eccentric ride it promises. Still, for its moments of madness and its unique concept, it remains a afairly enjoyable watch.
