MoS Pabitra Margherita questions Rahul Gandhi over remarks on Zubeen Garg

Guwahati, April 3 (SocialNews.XYZ) Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita on Friday criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his remarks concerning popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, asserting that “politics should not be played” around the artiste.

Addressing the media during a campaign event in Upper Assam, Margherita raised sharp questions over Rahul Gandhi’s comments, asking how the Congress leader could promise justice in the matter.

“How can Rahul Gandhi ensure justice to Zubeen Garg? Is he part of the judiciary?” Margherita remarked, taking a swipe at what he termed “irresponsible political statements”.

The Union Minister emphasised that sensitive issues involving individuals, especially cultural icons like Zubeen Garg, should not be politicised for electoral gains.

“Zubeen Garg is a respected figure in Assam’s cultural landscape. Dragging his name into political narratives is unfortunate and unacceptable,” he said.

Margherita further alleged that the Congress has a history of exploiting emotional issues for political mileage, adding that such tactics would not resonate with the people of Assam.

“The people are aware and will not be misled by such attempts,” he said.

The remarks come amid heightened political activity in the state ahead of the upcoming elections, with leaders across parties intensifying their campaigns and sharpening their rhetoric.

Margherita, who has been actively campaigning in Upper Assam, reiterated the BJP-led NDA government’s commitment to development and stability in the region. He urged voters to reject what he described as “divisive and opportunistic politics” and continue to support the ruling alliance.

The controversy surrounding Zubeen Garg has recently drawn significant public attention, with political leaders weighing in, further fuelling the debate in Assam’s charged electoral atmosphere.

The state government has already set up a fast-track court to probe the demise of the iconic Assamese singer, and hearings in the matter are underway. Garg died during a sea outing in Singapore on September 19 last year.
