Ram Gopal Varma Declares ‘Dhurandhar 2’ a Game-Changer, Calls It “Godfather’s Godfather”

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has once again stirred the conversation in the film industry with a bold and thought-provoking statement following the impact of Dhurandhar 2. Known for his unapologetic opinions, Varma has not only praised the film but also announced a complete creative reset in his filmmaking approach, signaling what he calls a “rebirth” as a director.

 

In his detailed note, Varma explained why his upcoming project is titled Syndicate instead of Sarkar, drawing a sharp distinction in concept and scale. According to him, Syndicate is based on a chilling premise — imagining a scenario where India’s entire law and order system collapses in a single day. He described it as a horror-like experience, not due to supernatural elements, but because of the terrifying realities of human behavior. The story revolves around the rise of a powerful and dangerously organized force that threatens the very existence of the nation.

 

Reflecting on his personal journey, Varma shared how his ambitions and inspirations have constantly evolved over time. From wanting to be an auto-rickshaw driver as a child to exploring dreams of living in a forest, becoming an engineer, and eventually a filmmaker — his path has been shaped by changing influences. He also cited literary inspirations like Enid Blyton, James Hadley Chase, and Frederick Forsyth, each of whom redefined his creative benchmarks at different stages of his life.

 

Varma went on to connect these evolving inspirations with his cinematic journey. He revealed that his earlier films were heavily influenced by classics like The Sound of Music, The Exorcist, and The Godfather. These benchmarks shaped iconic works in his career such as Rangeela, Raat, Bhoot, Satya, Company, and Sarkar. However, he now believes that Dhurandhar 2 has completely surpassed those influences, redefining storytelling, character design, music, performances, and action choreography at an unprecedented level.

 

In a striking comparison, Varma described Dhurandhar 2 as “Godfather’s Godfather,” suggesting that it has reinvented the cinematic language of the genre. He openly admitted that his previous work now feels insignificant in comparison, emphasizing the need to abandon old-school filmmaking ideologies. He credited Aditya Dhar and his team for creating a new cinematic benchmark that demands serious study and adaptation from filmmakers across the industry.
