Celebrating 4 Years of 'RRR': A Cinematic Legacy of Vision, Heroism, and Global Impact

On the fourth anniversary of the blockbuster RRR, Pen Movies shared a special tribute on social media, tweeting a video captioned, “4 years of RRR, One vision. Two legends. Infinite impact. S. S. Rajamouli × Ram Charan × N. T. Rama Rao Jr, A cinematic roar that echoed across the world #4YearsofRRR #RRR #MovieAnniversary #PenMovies.”

Directed by S. S. Rajamouli, who co-wrote the screenplay with V. Vijayendra Prasad, RRR is a 2022 Telugu-language epic period action drama produced by D. V. V. Danayya under DVV Entertainment. The film stars N. T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan as fictionalized versions of Indian freedom fighters Komaram Bheem and Alluri Sitarama Raju, respectively. The supporting cast includes Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, Shriya Saran, Samuthirakani, Ray Stevenson, Alison Doody, and Olivia Morris, marking their Telugu debuts. The film tells a fictionalized tale of two historical revolutionaries during India’s pre-independence era.

Made on a staggering budget of ₹550 crore, RRR was the most expensive Indian film at the time of its release on March 25, 2022. It was also the first Indian film released in Dolby Cinema format. The movie achieved massive commercial success, earning ₹223 crore worldwide on its first day—the highest opening day for an Indian film at the time—and grossing over ₹1,300–1,387 crore globally. In its home market of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, it became the highest-grossing film, accumulating over ₹406 crore.

The film also earned critical acclaim for its direction, screenplay, performances, cinematography, soundtrack, action sequences, and visual effects. Its song Naatu Naatu won the Oscar for Best Original Song at the 95th Academy Awards, marking the first win for an Asian song in this category and making RRR the first Indian feature film to win an Academy Award. It also became the third Indian film and the first Telugu film to receive Golden Globe nominations, winning Best Original Song, and secured wins at the 28th Critics’ Choice Awards for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Song.

At the 69th National Film Awards, RRR claimed six honors, including Best Popular Feature Film, Best Music Direction for M. M. Keeravani, and Best Male Playback Singer for Kaala Bhairava for “Komuram Bheemudo.” The film also received the Telangana Gaddar Film Award for Best Feature Film, cementing its legacy as both a commercial and critical phenomenon that continues to inspire audiences worldwide.
