The series follows Divya, a dreamer who runs away from home in search of fame and independence, only to discover power and survival in the dangerous world of crime. As the story unfolds, the character transforms from an innocent outsider into a fearless and influential figure within the underworld. The narrative explores ambition, betrayal, and the emotional cost of becoming unstoppable in a ruthless environment.
Speaking about the complexity of her character, Sana admitted that the role demanded a major shift from the kind of characters audiences usually associate with her. She explained that the most interesting part of the journey was portraying Divya’s gradual transformation.
“I think I was really in awe of the fact that there was something challenging for me. Everyone plays a fun, bubbly character, you know, that hustle, that struggle character. But then the transition, the fear, the boldness, the bravery that she shows during the show. I think that transition was a little difficult. But like that gun, gun in this show. If you've seen the trailer, I think there's this shot where she says, 'I fired the shot for the first time, you know, I fired the shot for the first time, so she doesn't have any guilt, but she enjoyed it, you know, so that's her journey, about how she goes from being innocent to a strong, confident Begum. What is Begum? I mean, you know, she's a queen, so what led her to become the queen. And another thing we mentioned in the trailer is that you know, she has a crown on top of her head, which is full of blood. So, her journey is such that you will genuinely feel that yes, whatever happened in this prisoner's journey and whatever she wanted, she makes sure she gets it.”
For Sana, the role was also an opportunity to explore the hidden strength she believes many women carry within themselves. Reflecting on the shift from a sweet persona to a powerful gangster figure, she shared how the character represents an inner fierceness that often remains unseen.
“Even sweet, simple-looking girls have this within them. You know, we all are strong. I think as women, we all have that quality. That we are very strong. They are very fierce, and we all have those qualities. A wife, a mother, a sister, a friend, a girl, you know, we portray so many roles, so I think we have that quality.”
Interestingly, the dark tone of the series also aligns with Sana’s personal viewing preferences. The actor revealed that she has always been fascinated by crime stories and mob dramas.
“I generally love it in person. I like it very much. You know, I am a little bit into Don dramas. I am a little bit into Don books. So, I like all of that.”
Alongside Sana in the series is Karan Sharma, who plays Guddu, a key figure who becomes involved in Divya’s criminal journey. The supporting cast also includes Kajal Pahuja, Snehil Kukreti, Ravi Mann, and Sarbajit Sengupta.
The first season of Begum of Crime consists of six episodes and dives deep into the psychology of power and survival. With its gritty tone and a character arc that shifts from innocence to authority, the series positions Sana Makbul at the center of a dramatic transformation that audiences may not have expected from her.
