Challenging My Boundaries With Animal Says Mahesh Manjrekar

Veteran filmmaker and actor Mahesh Manjrekar recently stunned audiences in Mumbai with Animal, a one-man, 2-hour-30-minute theatrical performance that blends monologue, song, and dance. The intense drama has been described as a test of endurance, skill, and emotional depth, showcasing Manjrekar’s versatility as a performer.

 

Speaking about the challenges of performing solo on stage, Manjrekar said, “I hope and I'm praying that I do a good job. Because it's not an easy place. It's not an easy play. It's a very difficult play, it is more than two hours. I'm going to talk nonstop. And I'm not getting any younger. But I am challenging my boundaries. Hopefully I will succeed.” 

 

His candid reflection underscores the physical and emotional stamina required to deliver a two-and-a-half-hour solo performance.

 

On his collaboration with producer Ashvin Gidwani of AGP World, Manjrekar shared, “Ashvin and I go a long way back. Ashwin, I don't treat him as the producer; he's a friend of mine, and actually, whatever I want to do, I can just want to. Up to him and ask Ashwin, I want to do this, and I know it. I've done a play with him two years ago, but now, after so many years, we're doing theater together, and it's always a pleasure, so Ashwin is a friend.”

 

Manjrekar not only stars in Animal but also wrote and directed the play. The story centers on Dattu, a small-town dreamer who moves from near Pandharpur to Mumbai, chasing his ambitions. As he struggles to make it in the city, the play explores the emotional toll of relentless ambition, societal apathy, and the harsh realities of urban survival.

 

Through Dattu’s journey, Manjrekar reflects on the erosion of the human spirit under pressure, emphasizing the silent, repetitive, and humbling nature of struggle. The title Animal is inspired by Aristotle’s idea of man as a “social animal,” highlighting the intersection of human ambition and social environment.

 

The play has been praised for its bold storytelling, intricate character portrayal, and Manjrekar’s sheer stage presence. By taking on the demanding role of a solo performer, he challenges not only his own limits but also the expectations of Indian theater, setting a new benchmark for one-man shows in contemporary drama.
