Varun Dhawan Shares His Nervous Yet Emotional Experience of Working with Sunny Deol in ‘Border 2’

The teaser launch of Border 2 in Mumbai was filled with pride, nostalgia, and heartfelt moments as Varun Dhawan opened up about sharing screen space with Sunny Deol for the very first time. The grand event was attended by Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, Ahan Shetty, Bhushan Kumar, director Anurag Singh, and several members of the film’s team, marking a major milestone ahead of the film’s Republic Day weekend release.

 

Speaking candidly at the event, Varun admitted that working with Sunny Deol made him nervous in a way he hadn’t experienced in years. He said, “First and foremost, I would like to say that after a long time I was nervous and emotional. As an actor, you put all your expectations into a film—you feel that you’ve done this film and hope the audience appreciates it. But above all that, the most important thing for me was that I was working with Sunny Deol sir. So genuinely, thank you sir, for giving me, and all of us, the opportunity to work with you.”

 

Varun went on to share a behind-the-scenes moment that left a lasting impact on him during the shoot. “When I started shooting, I began earlier, and four days prior to his shoot, Sunny Deol sir arrived. Anurag sir and I were wondering what to do because for the first time in my career, such a mega actor would just come to the set, sit in his chair, and simply watch the shooting. He wouldn’t say anything—he would just sit there—and that made me super comfortable,” Varun recalled.

 

However, the real emotions surfaced during his first scene with Sunny Deol. Varun continued, “Despite all this, when I did my first scene with Sunny sir—where he shouts his dialogue and calls my name—I got so nervous. I went to my director and said, ‘He is sounding just like Sunny Deol.’ And my director said, ‘He is Sunny Deol. What else did you expect?’ I literally had to pinch myself. I couldn’t believe I was working with him.”

 

Border 2 is an epic war film and the sequel to J.P. Dutta’s 1997 classic Border. Directed by Anurag Singh and produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, J.P. Dutta, and Nidhi Dutta, the film features Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh, and Ahan Shetty in pivotal roles.

 

The ensemble cast also includes Sonam Bajwa, Mona Singh, Medha Rana, Anya Singh, and Paramvir Cheema. Set against the backdrop of the 1971 Indo-Pak War, Border 2 is scheduled to release in theatres on January 23, 2026, coinciding with the Republic Day weekend, and promises a powerful blend of patriotism, emotion, and legacy-driven storytelling.
