Sonu Sood Urges India to Ban Social Media for Kids Under 16, Citing Australia's Lead

Actor and philanthropist Sonu Sood has taken to social media to call for a ban on social media use for children under 16 in India, following Australia’s groundbreaking move. In a tweet, Sood wrote: “Countries like Australia have already banned social media for kids under 16 — and it’s time India considers the same. Our children deserve real childhoods, stronger family bonds, and freedom from screen addiction. Our Govt has taken incredible steps for the nation’s future, and this one could set another powerful example. Let’s protect our kids today for a better India tomorrow.”

Australia’s new law, effective December 9, 2025, requires social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram to verify the ages of users, aiming to curb screen addiction and protect young minds. Research, including a 2023 Lancet study, has shown that heavy social media use can double the risk of depression among adolescents.

Sood’s call highlights the growing concern over children’s mental health and the need for stronger family bonds in the digital age. While Australian policy enforces outright restrictions, Indian experts, including those cited in the Times of India, have so far focused on parental awareness and responsible usage rather than a full ban.

The actor’s timely appeal has sparked discussion online, garnering widespread agreement among parents and educators. At the same time, Sood’s social media mentions continue to include personal aid requests, reflecting his dual role as both advocate and humanitarian.

By pushing for a nationwide conversation, Sonu Sood underscores the importance of safeguarding childhood in an increasingly digital world, reinforcing his position as a socially conscious public figure beyond his film career.
