Gulzar Honoured at Whistling Woods as Subhash Ghai’s ‘Guru’ in Cinema and Poetry

The golden glow of Indian cinema’s legacy shone brightly at Whistling Woods International during the Celebrate Cinema festival, where legendary lyricist, filmmaker, and poet Gulzar made a rare and heartfelt appearance. The two-day event, which began on October 9, paid a moving tribute to cinematic greats Raj Kapoor and Guru Dutt, while also turning the spotlight on the unsung soul of films — lyrics and poetry.

 

Speaking to ANI at the event, Gulzar saab was his ever-gracious, thoughtful self as he reflected on how cinema has always been inseparable from literature and music. “In Pune, we used to have monthly gatherings where we discussed all elements of cinema,” he recalled. “I give credit to Subhash Ghai for appreciating lyrics and their combination with music. This is the very first time somebody has done it, and I truly admire his forward-thinking…”

 

It's a rare nod from one master to another — and Ghai received it with emotion. In his tribute to Gulzar, the Showman of Bollywood turned student for a moment, calling the poet his true “guru.” “Who could be a better guru than Gulzar saab?” he asked. “He teaches us about life and emotions through his poetry, his literature, his stories, his films, and his words. Whenever he speaks, there is always something to learn.”

 

The atmosphere at Whistling Woods International, Ghai’s premier film and media institute, was one of reverence and celebration. As students and professionals gathered under one roof, the event became a living bridge between eras — from the nostalgia of Kapoor and Dutt to the timeless insight of Gulzar.

 

Celebrate Cinema isn't just about films; it’s about the people behind the camera, the pen, and the piano. With Gulzar and Subhash Ghai sharing the same stage — mentor and mentee — it became clear that Indian cinema isn’t just surviving its golden legacy; it’s carrying it forward, one lyric, one lesson at a time.
