The Family McMullen Trailer Is Out

Warner Bros has finally unveiled the trailer for The Family McMullen, the long-anticipated follow-up to Edward Burns’ breakout indie classic The Brothers McMullen—and it’s as warm, witty, and emotionally tangled as fans could hope for.

 

Set for a one-night-only theatrical release on October 15, 2025, the new film picks up decades after the original, finding the McMullen family still wrestling with love, loss, and loyalty—but this time, the next generation has joined the fray.

 

Edward Burns returns as Barry McMullen, now in his 50s and navigating single parenthood and second chances. He’s joined by Michael McGlone as his brother Patrick and Connie Britton as Molly, the widowed wife of the third McMullen brother, who’s gone but clearly not forgotten. New faces bring fresh dynamics, including Tracee Ellis Ross, Halston Sage, Juliana Canfield, Pico Alexander, and Brian d’Arcy James, as the family expands and romantic entanglements multiply.

The trailer blends heart and humor in equal measure—touching on themes of generational change, Irish American identity, and the ever-complicated dance of family. There's nostalgia, yes, but also evolution. The McMullens are older, maybe a little wiser, but still figuring it out—just like the rest of us.

 

Written and directed once again by Edward Burns, The Family McMullen looks like a natural continuation of the personal, ensemble-driven storytelling that first made him a Sundance darling in 1995. For longtime fans, it’s a chance to revisit familiar characters with new depth. For newcomers, it’s a standalone drama-comedy about messy love and family that doesn’t require a crash course in indie cinema history (though it wouldn’t hurt).
