Vijay Breaks Silence: A Tragedy, A Pledge, and a Political Storm

Actor-turned-politician Thalapathy Vijay vented his outrage on social media on Tuesday in the form of a video message that was at once grief, defiance, and political statement. Tackling the tragic stampede that occurred on the 27th of September, 2025, during his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) rally in Karur—where 41 supporters, including children, lost their lives—Vijay said he was deeply grieved and called the experience "the most painful moment" of his life. The stampede, triggered by overcrowding and heatstroke from his tardy entry, has since invited legal attention and political scandal.

 

Vijay emotionally collapsed in the video, justifying his stay away from Karur after the tragedy and saying it was done out of "love" and emotional hardship. He vowed to personally meet the families of the victims and keep offering medical assistance. 

 

Admitting that the tragedy should never have happened, he shifted part of the blame onto systemic issues and pointed fingers at political rivals for allegedly exploiting the incident for their gain. “I’m also human, aren’t I?” he asked, appealing to the public’s empathy. But the message wasn't just about mourning—it was also a sharp political retort. Vijay cautioned Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin against targeting his party cadre, saying unequivocally: "If you want to take revenge, do anything to me. I'll be in my house or office." His statement came in response to FIRs registered against several TVK leaders, two of whom—V.P. Mathiyalagan and Kasi Pounraj—have already been remanded to judicial custody.

 

The offenses are culpable homicide not amounting to murder and endangering public safety according to the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

 

Vijay insisted the rally had police permits and referred to the five past campaign events that passed without incident. He put the Karur tragedy in perspective as one of the tough trials of his five-month anti-corruption political campaign, promising to continue with even firmer determination. "The people are watching everything," he declared, emphasizing the belief that public support would stand behind him during the storm.

 

As the government of Tamil Nadu appoints retired judge Aruna Jagadeesan to head an inquiry, and more names from the FIR surface—TVK general secretary Bussy Anand and deputy Nirmal Kumar among them—the questions of crowd safety, accountability, and political responsibility continue to take center stage. Amidst all this, Vijay's video serves as a turning point: not a response to a tragedy, but a statement of intent to keep going, no matter the price.
