Dies Irae, the title of the film, can be translated to "Day of Wrath" in Latin, which is already ominous enough. The film is based on a true story, another fact which would ensure that the goosebumps do not linger long after the closing credits. Pranav Mohanlal, from what can be gathered from the trailer, is definitely venturing into darker genres than ever before, his character hounded by something way beyond his own control.
Rahul Sadasivan, who made his mark in the horror genre with Bhoothakaalam and the award-winning Bramayugam, returns with his winning crew. With Shehnad Jalal at the helm of the camera and Christo Xavier composing the score, the sound and visuals promise to craft an atmosphere soaked in fear and loveliness. It is less the conventional jump-scare genre fare and more an emotional free fall into horror, remembrance, and the unseen.
What makes this movie even more compelling is the father-son relationship at its core. Seeing Pranav make a big leap into a psychological horror with Mohanlal rooting him on is like passing of the baton in Malayalam cinema. The fans are not merely being treated to a horror film; they're seeing legacy in action, set amidst the creepy background of ghosts and shadows.
By October 31, cinemas all over the globe will become gates of terror as Dies Irae comes just in time to celebrate the spooktacular occasion of Halloween. This is not another horror movie—but it is more like a considered plunge into terror, judgment, and human frailty. So take your popcorn, clutch your fearlessness, and keep in mind: sometimes the most terrifying specters are the things we cannot avoid.
