Sony Pictures Unveils Gritty First Look at Caught Stealing, Directed by Darren Aronofsky

Sony Pictures has released a gritty sneak-peek featurette for Caught Stealing, the upcoming high-octane crime thriller directed by Darren Aronofsky and adapted from Charlie Huston’s cult noir novel of the same name. Set in the grungy chaos of 1990s New York, the film marks a bold, genre-bending entry into Aronofsky’s already eclectic and visceral filmography.

Front and center is Austin Butler as Hank Thompson, a washed-up former baseball prodigy-turned-alcoholic bartender whose quiet, defeated life takes a violent turn. When his punk-rock neighbor, Russ, asks him to watch over a seemingly innocent house cat, Hank is pulled into a blood-soaked underground he never knew existed. What begins as a simple favor spirals into a full-blown nightmare — and Hank finds himself on the run from corrupt cops, Russian mobsters, psycho siblings in leather, and a Samoan hitman… all because of what’s hidden in the cat’s cage.

The ensemble cast includes Regina King, Zoë Kravitz, Matt Smith, Liev Schreiber, Vincent D’Onofrio, Griffin Dunne, and Carol Kane — a rogues' gallery of talent that perfectly suits the film’s darkly comedic, twisted tone.

The featurette teases chaotic alleyway chases, brutal barroom brawls, and a pulsating 90s NYC backdrop soaked in neon grime and noir shadows. Aronofsky, known for pushing psychological and visual boundaries (Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan), appears to lean hard into pulp energy and grindhouse thrills here, while keeping the psychological edge that defines his work.

The screenplay is penned by Charlie Huston himself, giving fans of the novel confidence that the raw, no-holds-barred tone of the source material will survive the transition to screen. Butler’s transformation into Hank looks grizzled and emotionally charged — a gritty follow-up to his more glamorous turns.

Caught Stealing is slated for release on August 29, 2025, and looks poised to be one of the wildest cinematic rides of the year — a darkly funny, ultra-violent descent into urban madness, where survival depends on more than just street smarts… it depends on staying one step ahead of absolutely everyone.
