Anees Bazmee Marks 30 Years of Hulchul on Kajol’s Birthday with a Nostalgic Tribute

Filmmaker Anees Bazmee took to social media to celebrate a special milestone — 30 years of his action-thriller Hulchul, which also happens to mark the birthday of the film’s leading lady, Kajol. 

 

Sharing a nostalgic post, he wrote: “Three decades of Hulchul. Grateful for everyone who watched, felt, and remembered #Hulchul”, tagging @ajaydevgn and @itsKajolD.” 

 

Released on August 4, 1995, Hulchul was Bazmee’s directorial debut and featured a star-studded cast including Vinod Khanna, Ajay Devgn, Kajol, Ronit Roy, Amrish Puri, and Kader Khan. While the film received mixed reviews and was an average performer at the box office, it holds a special place in Bollywood history — not least because it marked the first on-screen pairing of Ajay Devgn and Kajol, who would later become one of the industry’s most beloved real-life couples.

 

The film combined elements of action, suspense, and family drama, with a touch of the signature masala that came to define Bazmee's future work. Though not a blockbuster at the time, Hulchul has gained cult value over the years, especially among fans of '90s Bollywood thrillers.

 

Anees Bazmee, now known for his comedy blockbusters like No Entry, Welcome, and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, used the anniversary to reflect on the journey that began with this film — one that launched his long and successful directorial career.

 

As fans revisit the film three decades later, it’s not just Hulchul they’re celebrating, but also a moment in time when a new chapter of Bollywood was just beginning to unfold.
