Rajinikanth Graces THR India Cover as 'Coolie' Marks 50 Iconic Years of Thalaivar on Screen

In a momentous celebration of cinematic royalty, The Hollywood Reporter India has unveiled its August cover featuring none other than Rajinikanth, marking his 50-year milestone in Indian cinema. The tweet, posted with fanfare, reads: “A #THRIndia Exclusive! Superstar #Rajinikanth (@rajinikanth), revered as #Thalaivar completes 50 years in cinema… Catch the August issue, on stands tomorrow.”

This cover story lands just ahead of the release of Rajinikanth’s much-hyped film Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and produced by Sun Pictures, scheduled to release on August 14, 2025. The film is already a box office contender, with overseas rights selling for a staggering $8 million, indicating that Thalaivar’s draw is as thunderous today as it was in the '80s.

From his humble beginnings as a bus conductor in Bangalore to becoming the demi-god of South Indian cinema, Rajinikanth’s journey is the stuff of movie lore. Since his debut in K. Balachander’s Apoorva Raagangal (1975), he has built an empire on charisma, punch dialogues, and gravity-defying swagger—rising from villain roles to mass-hero status with a cult following spanning continents.

The nickname “Thalaivar” (leader) isn't just for show. Rajini has earned accolades from fans and governments alike—including the Padma Vibhushan in 2016 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2019. His star power remains unmatched, with films like Enthiran (2010) setting new records, raking in a then-unheard-of $49 million (inflation-adjusted).

Coolie marks a unique collaboration with the Master of Neo-Mass, Lokesh Kanagaraj, and features a power-packed ensemble including Aamir Khan, Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, and Sathyaraj. With all eyes on its August release, Coolie isn’t just a film—it’s the cinematic event of the year.

As THR India dubs him “The Time Bender,” it’s clear: Rajinikanth isn’t bound by eras—he defines them. Half a century in the game, and he’s still setting it on fire.
