Set against the backdrop of post-World War I America, the story follows Lionel, a gifted young music student who first meets David at the Boston Conservatory in 1917. Their shared passion for folk music becomes the foundation for a deep and complex bond. Years later, Lionel receives a letter from David that sets him on a soul-searching journey through the backwoods of Maine. Together, they embark on a mission to record and preserve traditional American folk songs, and in the process, reignite a love that will alter Lionel’s life forever.
Based on the short story of the same name by Ben Shattuck—who also penned the screenplay—The History of Sound is a meditative exploration of memory, music, and queer love in early 20th-century America. The film captures the quiet beauty of landscapes, the fragility of connection, and the power of music as a vessel for history and emotion.
Director Oliver Hermanus, known for Living and Moffie, brings his signature lyrical style and sensitivity to this period romance, promising a visually rich and emotionally layered experience.
The History of Sound is slated for theatrical release on September 12th, 2025, and is expected to be a major contender in the fall awards circuit.
