Netflix Unveils Gripping Trailer for Rivers of Fate, a Dark Amazonian Thriller Set to Release August 20

Netflix has released the official trailer for its upcoming Brazilian mini-series Rivers of Fate, a harrowing and atmospheric thriller adapted from Edyr Augusto’s acclaimed novel of the same name. Directed by Quico Meirelles and Fernando Meirelles, the series promises a haunting exploration of survival, trauma, and resilience set against the mysterious waterways of the Amazon. Originally titled Pssica in Brazil, the series is scheduled to premiere on August 20, 2025.

At the heart of the story is Janalice, played by Domithila Cattete, a teenage girl kidnapped by a ruthless river gang operating in Pará, Brazil. As she is dragged into the depths of an international sex trafficking ring, her path collides with other characters fighting demons of their own. The series weaves together multiple narratives, illustrating how fate and fear entangle lives along the edges of the Amazon River. The trailer hints at the region’s lush beauty, but also its lawlessness and hidden violence.

The cast includes Marleyda Soto, Lucas Galvino, Ademara, Bruno Goya, Claudio Jaborandy, Luca Dan, Ricardo Teodoro, Sandro Guerra, Welket Bungué, and Wesley Guimarães, creating a powerful ensemble anchored by complex performances. Created by Stephanie Degreas, Fernando Garrido, and Bráulio Mantovani, Rivers of Fate merges social realism with psychological drama, offering a gripping narrative shaped by the region’s harsh realities and deep-rooted folklore—including the “pssica,” or curse, that seems to haunt Janalice’s journey.

With its powerful themes, urgent storytelling, and the visual signature of the Meirelles brothers (known for City of God and The Two Popes), Rivers of Fate is poised to be one of Netflix’s most compelling global dramas this year. The series not only explores the impact of exploitation and crime, but also honors the courage and humanity of those who resist it.
