Farhan Akhtar Celebrates 4 Years of Toofaan: “From the Streets to the Ring”

Actor, filmmaker, and musician Farhan Akhtar took to social media today to celebrate the 4-year anniversary of his 2021 sports drama Toofaan. Directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Toofaan was released on July 16, 2021, via Amazon Prime Video and told the gripping story of Ajju Bhai, an orphan and small-time extortionist from Dongri, who transforms into Aziz Ali, a national-level boxer. Loosely inspired by the Bengali film Chaamp (2018), Toofaan explored themes of redemption, inner discipline, and the unifying power of sports in a fractured society.

 

The film starred Farhan in one of his most physically demanding roles, alongside Mrunal Thakur, who played the compassionate and determined Dr. Ananya, and veteran actor Paresh Rawal as the no-nonsense boxing coach Narayan Prabhu. Their dynamic performances added emotional depth to what could have been a straightforward sports drama, and the film quickly found resonance among fans of inspirational cinema.

 

With powerful writing by Vijay Maurya, a rousing score by Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy, and lyrics by Javed Akhtar, Toofaan managed to pack both punches and poetry. Set against the backdrop of Mumbai’s vibrant but gritty underbelly, it also touched on class, religion, and belonging, giving the film both muscle and meaning.
