Rekha Steals the Spotlight at Umrao Jaan’s Grand Re-Release Screening, Joined by Aamir Khan, Anil Kapoor, Fatima Sana Shaikh And More

In a dazzling celebration of cinematic legacy, the makers of Umrao Jaan hosted a star-studded special screening in Mumbai on Thursday night, ahead of the film’s grand re-release in theatres on June 27. The event turned into an unforgettable evening, not just for the film’s admirers but for Bollywood fans, as legendary actress Rekha, who played the titular role in the 1981 classic, arrived in stunning form.

 

Dressed in an opulent ivory and gold ensemble complete with intricate embroidery and traditional jewellery, Rekha was the embodiment of grace and nostalgia. Her red carpet presence became the highlight of the night — as videos of her joyfully twirling to her iconic dance steps from the film flooded social media, rekindling the magic of Umrao Jaan.

 

In a delightful moment, Anil Kapoor, who arrived at the event with folded hands and warm respect, was coaxed by Rekha into recreating a few dance moves on the red carpet. The impromptu performance drew loud cheers from photographers and fans, capturing a heartwarming slice of film history.

 

Joining the celebration were a host of Bollywood stars including Aamir Khan, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Khushi Kapoor, Anjini Dhawan, Tanisha Mukerji, Mira Kapoor, and Nushrratt Bharuccha, all of whom paid tribute to the timeless classic.

 

Another highlight of the night was Rekha’s meeting with music maestro A.R. Rahman, as the two shared a light-hearted moment and posed for selfies, much to the delight of onlookers.

 

Directed by Muzaffar Ali and based on Mirza Hadi Ruswa’s 1899 Urdu novel Umrao Jaan Ada, the film is revered as one of Indian cinema’s most iconic period dramas. Rekha’s portrayal of the courtesan-poet from Lucknow remains a landmark performance, earning her the National Award for Best Actress. The film also won accolades for its music, composed by Khayyam, and lyrics by Shahryar.

 

The re-release of Umrao Jaan offers a new generation the chance to experience this poetic saga on the big screen — and the special screening proved that even after 43 years, the film and its star continue to cast an unshakable spell.
