Somewhere in the winding alleys of Budapest, where mist curls off cobblestones and secrets should ideally lurk behind velvet curtains, Detective Sherdil sets up shop—and promptly forgets to turn the “mystery” sign on.

Directed by Ravi Chhabriya and starring the ever-charismatic Diljit Dosanjh as the titular sleuth, the film arrives with a sparkling premise: a billionaire dead in his car, a suspicious will, missing heir, shady family members, and of course, a detective in a long coat who probably quotes his own Instagram captions. It sounds like an Agatha Christie setup… but then the plot trips, spills the tea (and the identity of the killer), and spends the next hour trying to make it look like an accident.

Diljit is the glue, the glitter, and the gas that keeps this sleepy mystery running. He’s smooth, stylish, and clearly having more fun than anyone else on screen. His one-liners? Gold. His investigation tactics? A mix of Sherlock Holmes and a stand-up comic. But even he can’t save a mystery that practically emails you the answer within the first 20 minutes. If you’ve watched two episodes of CID, congratulations—you’re now overqualified for Detective Sherdil.

The rest of the cast, including Ratna Pathak Shah, Diana Penty, and Chunky Pandey (who appears looking like a guru who wandered in from another movie), do their best to stay relevant. But the script gives them more confused looks than clever lines. And when the film tries to hit you with a “twist,” it lands with the force of a slightly aggressive yawn.

The background score screams “SUSPENSE!” even when someone’s just making tea, and every flashback feels like a conveniently placed “Previously on Detective Sherdil…” segment. By the end, you’re not waiting to find out who the killer is—you’re just wondering how Dosanjh’s hair still looks so good under pressure.

Detective Sherdil isn’t the worst way to spend 106 minutes, especially if you’re in it just for Diljit and his flair. But as a mystery? It’s as sharp as a butter knife in a rainstorm. Stream it on Zee5 if you're in the mood for a stylish near-miss of a whodunnit, and maybe have some popcorn ready—because at least that will keep you guessing.
