Farhan Akhtar Celebrates 21 Years of Lakshya: A Timeless Journey of Purpose and Patriotism

Marking a poignant milestone in Indian cinema, filmmaker Farhan Akhtar unveiled a motion poster celebrating 21 years of Lakshya, his landmark 2004 war drama that has since evolved into a cult classic.

Sharing the poster on social media, Farhan wrote: "Celebrating 21 years of a story about finding purpose, one step at a time. #21YearsOfLakshya" — a tribute to the film’s enduring legacy and its profound message of self-discovery and national duty.

Starring Hrithik Roshan, Preity Zinta, and Amitabh Bachchan, Lakshya tells the story of Karan Shergill, a privileged and aimless young man who finds direction and purpose after joining the Indian Army. As Karan transforms from a drifting youth into a courageous officer on the battlefield, the film mirrors a deeply personal and national journey — one of growth, discipline, and sacrifice.

Directed by Farhan Akhtar and penned by his father Javed Akhtar, the film was inspired by conversations with veterans of the 1999 Kargil War, lending it an authenticity that resonated with many, particularly within the armed forces. Though Lakshya faced commercial challenges upon its initial release, its narrative strength, powerful performances, and technical finesse earned it widespread critical acclaim and an enduring fanbase.

At the 50th Filmfare Awards, the film garnered four nominations, including Best Director (Farhan Akhtar) and Best Actor (Hrithik Roshan). It won two awards — Best Choreography for Prabhu Deva’s unique vision in “Main Aisa Kyun Hoon...”, and Best Cinematography for its visually stunning depiction of both Delhi’s urban landscapes and the rugged terrain of the war front.

Over the years, Lakshya has transcended its box office beginnings to become a defining film in Indian war cinema. Its re-release on the 20th anniversary in 2024 reaffirmed its place as a film that not only entertains but inspires. With music by the iconic trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and a supporting cast that includes Boman Irani and Om Puri, the film continues to strike a chord with new generations discovering its timeless themes.

From a cinematic perspective, Lakshya stands as a hallmark of nuanced storytelling, bridging emotional introspection with the grandeur of patriotic sacrifice. As India changes, the film’s core message — that purpose gives meaning to life — remains as relevant as ever.
