Ajay Devgn on Casting Kajol in Maa: “The Role Demanded Her Strength”

At the trailer launch of the upcoming mythological horror film Maa, Ajay Devgn opened up about his decision to cast his wife, Kajol, in the lead role—this time not as an actor but as the film’s producer. Set in the universe of Shaitaan, Maa explores a mother’s spiritual and supernatural battle to protect her child from dark forces in a haunted haveli. Speaking about the powerful female lead, Ajay remarked, “The character of the mother was so strong, who else could we imagine in the role but her?”

 

Sharing the stage with Kajol in Mumbai, Devgn reflected on the emotional weight of the story and why he believed Kajol was the perfect choice. “It wasn’t just about casting my wife,” he added. “This was about finding someone who could carry the emotional and psychological intensity the role demanded. Kajol brings that naturally.” His comment highlighted not just a personal connection, but a deep belief in her acting prowess.

 

Maa, directed by Vishal Furia, marks Kajol’s debut in the horror genre and expands the occult world introduced in Shaitaan. This time, myth and terror collide as a mother calls upon divine powers to fight off evil and save her child. With haunting visuals, high-stakes emotions, and strong spiritual undertones, the film weaves maternal instinct with supernatural grit.

 

Slated to release in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Bengali on June 27, 2025, Maa is shaping up to be more than just a genre film—it’s a statement on motherhood, courage, and sacrifice.
