The show is created by Vikramaditya Motwane and Satyanshu Singh, and continues to draw from the real-life experiences of Sunil Gupta, who served as a jailer at Tihar Prison for 35 years. Based on Gupta’s memoir Black Warrant, co-authored with investigative journalist Josy Joseph, the series offers an unfiltered look at India's most notorious inmates and the moral dilemmas faced by those guarding them.
Returning to lead the story is Zahan Kapoor as Gupta, with a strong supporting cast that includes Rahul Bhat, Paramvir Singh Cheema, and Anurag Thakur. The show also boasts a talented creative team, including producers from Applause Entertainment, Andolan Films, and Media Confluence, signaling a high-quality, well-researched production.
Season 1 of Black Warrant, which premiered on January 10, 2025, made an impressive debut with 2.3 million viewers in its first three days, according to Netflix’s internal data. Its sharp writing, gritty realism, and compelling performances earned praise, and the strong response likely accelerated the greenlighting of Season 2.
While the release date for Season 2 is yet to be announced, the first-look poster has already stirred anticipation among fans of true crime and prison dramas.
