First Trailer for Caught Stealing Promises Blood, Baseball, and Bad Decisions in 1990s NYC

Sony Pictures has officially dropped the trailer for Caught Stealing, a grimy, gleefully unhinged crime comedy thriller directed by Darren Aronofsky, marking a major genre pivot for the acclaimed filmmaker. Set in the sweat-soaked underbelly of 1990s New York City, the film stars Austin Butler as Hank Thompson—an ex-baseball prodigy turned bartender whose biggest mistake wasn’t quitting the game…it was saying yes to cat-sitting.

Adapted by Charlie Huston from his own cult-favorite novel, the story spirals into chaos when Hank finds himself at the center of a blood-soaked treasure hunt. That seemingly innocent cat? It's hiding a key—a literal one—that unlocks a mystery worth killing for. Soon, Hank is being chased through alleys, nightclubs, and bodegas by a rogue’s gallery that includes a sadistic NYPD cop, Russian mobsters, a Samoan hitman, and two leather-clad lunatic brothers. Think The Big Lebowski with a body count, or Snatch by way of Bukowski.

The ensemble cast is as wild as the plot itself: Regina King, Zoë Kravitz, Matt Smith, Liev Schreiber, Vincent D’Onofrio, Griffin Dunne, Carol Kane, and Benito A Martínez Ocasio (aka Bad Bunny) round out the colorful chaos. With Aronofsky at the helm, don’t expect just slapstick—it’s stylish, stylized mayhem with a pulsing heart, plenty of grit, and maybe even a philosophical rabbit hole or two. The trailer teases gunfights, sewer chases, twisted humor, and a Hank who's equal parts desperate and dangerous.

Slated for release on August 29, 2025, Caught Stealing looks like the kind of late-summer banger that’s made for midnight screenings and cult followings. With its noir-meets-nihilism tone and Aronofsky’s flair for taking characters to the edge (and over it), this could be the year’s strangest and most entertaining descent into NYC’s forgotten corners.
