Sanjay Dutt Unveils First Look of Raja Shivaji, Riteish Deshmukh to Direct Epic Saga

Actor Sanjay Dutt has officially dropped the first look poster and release date of the much-anticipated historical drama Raja Shivaji, a cinematic tribute to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the legendary Maratha warrior king. Taking to social media, Dutt wrote, “Privileged and honored to present a cinematic tribute to India’s legendary warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj!” The film is slated for a grand Pan-India release on May 1, 2026, coinciding with Maharashtra Day.

 

Directed by Riteish Vilasrao Deshmukh, Raja Shivaji marks his second directorial venture following the blockbuster Ved, and this time, he steps into epic historical territory. The film brings together Jio Studios and Mumbai Film Company and boasts an ensemble cast that includes Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek Bachchan, Mahesh Manjrekar, Sachin Khedekar, Bhagyashree, Fardeen Khan, Jitendra Joshi, Amole Gupte, Genelia Deshmukh, and Riteish himself.

 

Shot by acclaimed cinematographer Santosh Sivan and scored by celebrated composer duo Ajay-Atul, the film is shaping up to be a visual and musical spectacle. With production planned in six languages — Marathi, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam — Raja Shivaji aims to reach audiences across India with its powerful retelling of a pivotal chapter in Indian history.

 

Interestingly, Sanjay Dutt and Abhishek Bachchan are set to portray Mughal characters, suggesting a nuanced take on the historical conflict between the Marathas and the Mughals. This bold casting adds dramatic weight and complexity to the narrative, positioning Raja Shivaji not just as a patriotic tribute but also a layered exploration of legacy, resistance, and leadership.
