Speaking candidly about his reasons for making the film, Utekar said, “People of Mumbai and Maharashtra know about Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, but outside most people don’t know about him or his life or his sacrifices, or his courage. And that is the reason why I decided to make this movie. A hero of such magnitude, who laid down his life for his dharma, his courage and sacrifice must be known to the entire world.” His passion for bringing this untold chapter of history to light was evident as he continued, “With that, a lot of colors, shades, and layers are worked into the film, so that people must know about such a big warrior, a courageous king, a kind husband, and a huge protector of his people.”
Chhaava, based on the life of the brave and controversial Maratha king Sambhaji Maharaj, stars Vicky Kaushal in the titular role. It is adapted from the Marathi novel Chhava by Shivaji Sawant. The film’s powerful ensemble cast also features the talented Rashmika Mandanna, who plays an important role, and Akshaye Khanna, adding even more depth to this epic tale.
The film, produced by Dinesh Vijan under Maddock Films, promises to be a dramatic exploration of the heroism, challenges, and sacrifices of one of India’s most iconic yet underappreciated kings. With Utekar’s knack for storytelling and Kaushal’s commanding presence, Chhaava is expected to be a cinematic spectacle. The movie is slated for a theatrical release on 14th February 2025, and with its powerful premise, it is sure to captivate audiences far beyond the borders of Maharashtra.
