Dubbing is Self-Visualization Space Says Sharad Kelkar

Sharad Kelkar, a versatile actor known for his roles in both live-action films and animated series, recently shared insights into the art of dubbing, particularly his experience with SS Rajamouli's animated series Baahubali: Crown of Blood.

This series is based on the hugely successful Baahubali film franchise, set in the fictional kingdom of Mahishmati. The franchise, starring Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Anushka Shetty, and Tamannaah Bhatia, has taken Telugu cinema to national and global heights.

Reflecting on the differences between working in front of the camera and behind the microphone, Kelkar highlighted the unique challenges and joys of dubbing. “Working in front of the camera and behind the camera, both are different,” he explained. “For me, working is most important. I love acting, regardless of medium. When you’re shooting for a live-action film, there is a location, multiple cameras, co-actors, and plenty of technical aspects that you have to consider. You have your own costume, you work within the confines of your character. But when you’re just dubbing voice, and an animated character will be created later, then you don’t have anything—no costumes, no co-actors, no ambience or location. You don’t have the usual things, then you have to visualize everything on your own. You even must think about other characters as well, you have to consider the tone, scene, and mood of everything, so it is different and a little bit difficult, but it is a whole lot of fun.”

Kelkar’s passion for dubbing is evident, especially when he speaks about his favorite lines from the Baahubali series. “My favorite line from the Baahubali: Crown of Blood, I mean there are plenty, but I love one line from the original Baahubali, and I tried to do a different version of the same in the animation series, the line, ‘Jab Tak Tum Mere Saath Ho, Mujhe Maarne Wala Paida Hi Nahi Hua Mama.’”

Looking ahead, Kelkar expressed excitement about the upcoming release of the fourth season of The Legend of Hanuman, set to premiere next month. “I think they are calling it the fourth season, Hanuman, it will be releasing next month, and I am excited about it. The kind of love The Legend of Hanuman has received in the last three years, it’s amazing, because we all know the story and relate with it.”

Sharad Kelkar’s ability to bring characters to life, whether on screen or through his voice, is a testament to his versatility and passion for storytelling.
