Pippa - A Captivating War Drama with Strong Performances

Director: Raja Krishna Menon

Stars: Ishaan Khatter, Mrunal Thakur, Priyanshu Painyuli, Soni Razdan, Inaamulhaq

Rating – 3

Pippa, directed by Raja Krishna Menon, unfolds as a captivating war drama set against the backdrop of the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war and the struggle for Bangladesh's independence. The film revolves around the lives of three siblings—Balram Singh Mehta (Ishaan Khatter), Ram Mehta (Priyanshu Painyuli), and Radha (Mrunal Thakur)—during the tumultuous times of the Garibpur battle.

The narrative follows Captain Balram Singh Mehta, also known as Balli, who defies rules during an India-Russia military exercise. The story weaves between the personal lives of the Mehta siblings and the broader canvas of the war. Balram's actions lead to consequences, affecting the lives of his family members, including his mother Maati (Soni Razdan), Radha, and Ram. As the Indo-Pakistan war intensifies, Balram and Ram find themselves on the front lines, facing the challenges of war, while their family prays for their safe return.

"Pippa" successfully blends the personal stories of the characters with the larger canvas of a war drama. The film's gripping narrative keeps the intensity and essence of the war genre intact, showcasing the courage and valor of the soldiers alongside the emotional struggles of a family.

The performances of the star cast receive acclaim, with Ishaan Khatter shining in his role as Balram Singh Mehta. Priyanshu Painyuli delivers a standout performance as Ram Mehta, and Mrunal Thakur impresses with her portrayal of Radha. Soni Razdan adds depth to her role as the mother, contributing to the emotional fabric of the film.

While "Pippa" is lauded for its captivating storyline and strong performances, some initial pacing issues are noted, with the film taking time to build its core narrative. The inclusion of songs in a war drama is criticized, suggesting that a compelling background score would have better suited the film's gripping narrative. Additionally, certain events and scenes are deemed overdramatized.

In conclusion, "Pippa" emerges as a captivating war drama that evokes pride. Despite some initial pacing concerns and stylistic choices, the film successfully balances personal narratives with the intensity of war, creating a compelling cinematic experience.
