The National Hurricane Center says Hurricane Ian reached Category 4 strength on Wednesday morning.
Landfall is expected in southwest Florida Wednesday afternoon.
Forecasters predict a massive storm surge, torrential rains, and powerful winds.
At least 2.5 million people were told to evacuate.
Hurricane Ian was a Category three when it plowed over western Cuba on Tuesday.
It left the entire island nation without power.
Pro-Moscow officials say people in four occupied areas of eastern Ukraine voted overwhelmingly to become part of Russia.
The US and its allies say the vote was illegitimate, and orchestrated by Moscow.
Vice President Kamala Harris met with Japanese technology executives in Tokyo, and emphasized a new law that boosts US support for computer chip manufacturing.
The vice president said the US is looking for new investments and partnerships.
