New Delhi, Sep 7 (SocialNews.XYZ) Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was on a four-day visit to India. The Bangladesh PM met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday after arriving at the Rashtrapati Bhawan.
The joint statement issued by PM Hasina and PM Modi spoke of strong bilateral relations between the two countries and stressed on extending cooperation in different sectors.
Both the leaders asserted on the importance of continuing close security cooperation in the fields of counter-terrorism, border management, cross-border crimes.
The Bangladesh PM said that the two countries will soon resolve all outstanding issues, including the Teesta water sharing treaty. Though the joint statement issued by the heads of the two nations termed the bilateral relations of the two countries as a model of neighbourhood diplomacy, there have been incidents that raised questions about Bangladesh being a friendly neighbour.
Brutal killing of 16 Border Security Force (BSF) jawans by the Bangladeshi troops in the Boraibari incident of 2001 was one such incident that had strained the relations between the two countries.
CVoter-IndiaTracker conducted a nationwide opinion poll on behalf of IANS in the wake of Bangladesh PM's visit to know people's views about trustworthiness of Bangladesh as an ally and partner of India.
During the survey, while the majority of Indians - 63 per cent said that Bangladesh can be a trustworthy ally and partner, 37 per cent of respondents disagreed.
Notably, during the survey, a majority of both the NDA and opposition voters opined that the eastern neighbour can be a reliable partner of India. As per the survey data, 60 per cent of the NDA voters and 66 per cent of the opposition respondents believe that Bangladesh can be a truthful ally of India.
Similar sentiment was shared by the majority of both the urban and rural voters. During the survey, 63 per cent of urban respondents and 66 per cent of rural respondents said that Bangladesh can be a trustworthy neighbour.
