'Task won't be finished': CJI-designate Justice Lalit during Amrapali case hearing

New Delhi, Aug 22 (SocialNews.XYZ) Chief Justice of India (CJI)-designate Justice U.U. Lalit, during the hearing in Amrapali case on Monday, indicated that the task would not be finished, since he is due to retire in November, and a new bench might have to be constituted to hear the case.

During the hearing in the matter, Justice Lalit said this matter started from the Chief Justice's court and it will go to the Chief Justice's court, while scheduling the case for further hearing on September 3. Justice Lalit will take charge as Chief Justice of India on August 27.

The apex court had come to the rescue of thousands of Amrapali home buyers by ensuring, under its supervision, that their flats were constructed and they received possession. With the apex court has been hearing the Amrapali case for nearly four years, Justice Lalit remarked that the task, would not be finished as he indicated his retirement which is scheduled in November this year.

The apex court ensured that Amrapali home buyers' dreams were not shattered, and ensured funding for stalled Amrapali projects, as a consortium of seven banks granted the final approval to infuse Rs 1,500 crore to complete the unfinished housing projects.

In July 2019, the Supreme Court, in its verdict, cracked the whip on the real estate firm for breaching the trust of home buyers and gave relief to over 42,000 home buyers. The top court ordered the cancellation of the registration of the Amrapali Group under real estate law RERA and took it upon itself to ensure construction of stalled housing projects.

It appointed a receiver, senior advocate R Venkataramani, to oversee construction and directed the state-run National Building Construction Corporation (NBCC) to complete the housing projects.
