Mani Ratnam's magnum opus 'Ponniyin Selvan-1' is based on the 1995 novel Ponniyin Selvan by Kalki Krishnamurthy. The book is in five parts and is considered one of the greatest novels in the Tamil language.

PS1 chronicles the story of Raja Raja Chola. Literally, Ponniyin Selvan means 'the son of Ronni'. It is based on the story of Arulmozhivarman, who was later crowned as Raja Raja Chola 1.
It chronicles extensive details on many of the real historical figures from the Chola dynasty. Raja Raja Chola is known for building a temple that is world-famous even now, the Brihadeeswarar Temple, well-known as Periya Kovil.
Ponniyin Selvan will be a two-part movie, the music of the film is composed by AR Rahman. Mani Ratnam has also produced and written the film, along with Lyca Productions. It is co-written by Elango Kumaravel and B Jeyamohan. It reportedly cost Rs 500 crores to make this film. It will be one of the most expensive films in Indian cinema.
'Ponniyin Selvan- 1' will hit theatres on September 30, 2022.
