Disruption in Parliament not acceptable: Ex-Union Minister

New Delhi, April 5 (SocialNews.XYZ) Stating that disruption in the Parliament is not acceptable, former Union Minister and veteran Congress leader Karan Singh on Tuesday said that something has to be done to see that disruption does not take place in the Parliament.

Singh said this while addressing a seminar on 75 years of Independence by the India Centre for Policy Research and Development at Dr Ambedkar International Centre here.

Talking about disruption in Parliament, he said: "Disruption takes place in Parliament which is not acceptable. I have been in Parliament for 40 years in both houses of Parliament on the treasury bench and opposition. I notice disruption of Parliament has become a regular feature, this is not acceptable. If you disrupt parliament, you are disrupting the heart of the constitution. Something has to be done to see that this sort of disruption does not take place, and assemblies are the worst."

"The country has moved ahead in these 75 years from a time when we were not making a needle to today when we are making supersonic jets and satellites. We have come a long way, however, we have many unfinished revolutions," Singh said.

He said India has unfinished revolution in politics, economic, social, education and gender.

"First unfinished revolution is politics. With the brief exception of emergency, the constitution functioned brilliantly for 75 years. We have done brilliantly in 75 years politically. However, there are some problems. Huge amount of money is spent on elections which distort the political process. Elections become so expensive..." Singh said.

He mentioned that the second point of the unfinished political revolution is the increasing number of candidates is increasing, and "it must be limited to the top five".

"All sorts of people stand in elections, some only contest for hobbies. We have to get rid of this. One has to reduce the number of candidates," he said.

Talking about the unfinished economic revolution, Singh said that millions of people still live below the poverty line.

"It is shameful that such a situation exists. Till we end the poverty, we can't say we are independent," he said.

Speaking on the occasion, spiritual leader Shri Shri Ravi Shankar said: "State of mind completely depends on the happiness of the person, make the mind free from all the thoughts and give freedom."
