Filmmaker Rakeyush Omprakash Mehra was interacting with NewsHelpline at the launch event of his book "The Stranger In The Mirror".
Released in 2006, the film Rang De Basanti will clocks its 15th year of release. The film starred Aamir Khan, Siddharth, Atul Kulkarni, Soha Ali Khan, Sharman Joshi, Kunal Kapoor and British actress Alice Patten.
We asked Rakeysh about his experience of the film and his feelings as the movie is clocking a milestone, he said, “You feel good when your work is celebrated and remembered, it is like watching your baby grow, it feels good. Making a film is not important for me, the most important thing for me is when I look back after a decade or so, I feel proud that I made something good, whether it works on the box-office or not, that is secondary. The biggest learning is that whatever you do, it gives you permission to fail. Your success is because of your failures. That is my learning”
The film follows a British film student traveling to India to document the story of five freedom fighters of the Indian revolutionary movement. She befriends and casts five young men in the film, which inspires them to fight against the corruption of their own government. The movie still holds a special place in everyone’s heart.
With massive fan following and his streak on making on social based issues, we asked Rakeysh whether that puts extra responsibility on him as filmmaker.
He said, “It is a difficult question to answer, whatever you do there is always some sense of responsibility. Whether I am cleaning the roads or making a film or teaching in school or house chores, every work comes with responsibility, and it is same with every work, it doesn’t vary. And it is imperative that you go ahead with sense of responsibility”
