Get back to scoring big tons, taking five-fors: Elgar to SA cricketers

Cape Town, May 30 (SocialNews.XYZ) South Africa skipper Dean Elgar conceded that the skill level of his team "hasn't been where it should be" and that the players should "get back to scoring big hundreds and taking five-fors like it used to be".

The Proteas are scheduled to play a two-match Test series against the West Indies -- June 10-14 and June 18-22 -- for the Sir Vivian Richards Trophy in Gros Islet, Saint Lucia.

The team will depart on May 31 and arrive in Saint Lucia on June 1.

"Now that we are in a new chapter, we need to play more cricket and better cricket," Elgar told cricinfo.com ahead of the team's departure to the Caribbean via Paris.

"We are conscious that over the last period we haven't been very consistent. Our skill level hasn't been where it should be. We need to get back to a bit more of a consistent nature of cricket; a bit more of a South African way."

During the topsy-turvy summer of 2019, the Proteas played eight Tests, lost five and slumped to No. 7 on the ICC rankings, their lowest ever.

"We've always had a batting line-up that has scored heavily. And fast bowlers. That's the South African way. We need to get back to scoring big hundreds and taking five-fors like it used to be," said Elgar, as he aims to rebuild the team's red-ball game following unforgettable performances in the last two years.
