Congress Leader AK Antony, on Wednesday, commented Arnab’s leaked chats on WhatsApp should be treated as an act of “Treason”. Addressing a press conference Antony said that those involved in the leaking of official secrets of military operations should be punished.
He said that some people who aren’t authorized to possess classified national security documents which had secret and sensitive airstrikes information, possessed them.
Rahul Gandhi, on Tuesday, at a press conference made comments on Arnab’s leaked chats and said that giving out official secret information by a journalist is a “criminal act”.
At the release of booklet against the farm laws’ press conference Gandhi said, “The distressing thing for me was that when 40 of our jawans died, someone said ‘this is going to be very good for us’. I do not like the language. This is an anti-national act…it is a criminal action, giving official secret information to a journalist. I want to know whether it was the PM of India, home minister, defense minister or NSA who told Goswami…These people call themselves patriots. But there is nothing patriotic about putting our Air Force at risk.”
Antony emphasized that he was sure that no military officer would leak such sensitive information to a journalist or the like. A civilian in one of the top positions of the government could have done this.
“Leaking Official Secrets is a criminal act, leaking official secrets of national security matters or military operations, especially air force strikes is treason and anti-national activity. Whoever is involved has to be punished,” Antony said.
On Tuesday, the Maharashtra Congress demanded the arrest of Arnab Goswami of Republic TV. They allege that the WhatsApp chats between him and former CEO of BARC Partho Dasgupta amounts to treason.
Congress General Secretary Sachin Sawant said, “How did Goswami get the information about the military action three days before the event, in February 2020? HE himself has said that the person who gave him this information is a big person in the Modi government. All of this needs to be investigated. The way Anab Goswami acted amounts to a violation of the Official Secrets Act, 1923.”
