Film producer Ronnie Screwvala and director Abhishek Chaubey are collaborating with each other for the second time to make a film based on the life India’s legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand. The film will be co-produced by Premnath Rajagopalan and they haven’t made announcement about cast of the film as yet.
Ronnie Screwvala’s production house RSVP films shared a collage picture of Major Dhyanchand, Ronnie Screwvala, Abhishek Chaubey and Premnath Rajagopalan on their official Instagram handle on Tuesday and made official announcement of the film, the caption reads, “1500+ goals, 3 Olympic Gold medals & a story of India’s pride... It gives us immense pleasure to announce our next with the ace filmmaker #AbhishekChaubey - a biopic on the Hockey wizard of India, #DHYANCHAND #RonnieScrewvala @premnathrajagopalan @pashanjal @shivahereon @hasanainhooda @bluemonkey_film @macguffinpictures”.
Major Dhyan Chand is widely regarded as the greatest player of all time in the game of Hockey. He was known for his extraordinary goal-scoring feats, in addition to earning three Olympic gold medals, in 1928, 1932 and 1936, during an era where India dominated field hockey. His influence extended beyond these victories, as India won the field hockey event in seven out of eight Olympics from 1928 to 1964.
Known as The Wizard or The Magician of hockey for his superb ball control, Chand played internationally from 1926 to 1949; he scored 570 goals in 185 matches according to his autobiography, Goal. The Government of India awarded Chand India's third highest civilian honour of Padma Bhushan in 1956. His birthday, 29 August, is celebrated as National Sports Day in India every year.
Screwvala and Chaubey had earlier worked together for 2019 film’ Sonchiriya’ that starred Sushant Singh Rajput, Bhumi Pednekar, Manoj Bajpayee, Ranvir Shorey and Ashutosh Rana in lead roles.
The sports-drama film based on Major Dhyan Chand will hit the floors in 2021 and the makers are eyeing its theatre release in 2022.
