Mumbai: Hindu married women perform rituals on the occasion of ‘Vat Pournima’ in Mumbai on June 5, 2020. Vat Pournima is an important religious festival celebrated by married women on the full moon day of Hindu lunar month Jyeshtha. Married women keep fast for the well-being, prosperity and longevity of their husbands. The fasting is done to commemorate the devotion and determination shown by Savitri to win back her husband from the clutches of Yama (God of Death). The rituals start with a holy bath. After bath women offer prayers to the Banyan tree. After the worship, women tie a red, white or yellow coloured raw cotton thread around the tree. While chanting prayers, women offer prayers and distribute food, clothes and money to the poor. (Photo: IANS)
