Rome, Feb 27 (IANS/AKI) Less than 0.1 percent of Italian municipalities have been hit by the coronavirus, Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio said on Wednesday, launching a fresh attack on "inaccurate" and "deeply" damaging new reports on Italy's outbreak.
"There is so much fake news at this time which is deeply damaging to the economic fabric of our country and above all to our scientific community's reputation," Di Maio told reporters at the foreign press association here.
A total 42 out of 528 people who tested positive for the coronavirus have recovered from the disease - 37 in Lombardy, three in Lazio and two in Sicily, Italy's Special Coronavirus Commissioner Angelo Borrelli said on Wednesday.
The coronavirus has killed at least 14 in Italy - all older people resident in the northern Lombardy and Veneto regions where the outbreak is heavily concentrated.
Di Maio urged other countries to get their updates on Italy's coronavirus epidemic from the civil protection agency's daily bulletins alone.
"There is so much irrelevant information out there involving municipalities and regions," he said.
"For example - there has been a single coronavirus case in Piedmonte, but the whole is region is appearing on so-called lists of destinations that people are being advised not to visit," he said.
At least 11 European countries now have confirmed cases of coronavirus, some of which have been traced back to Italy. Around 70 per cent of tourists have cancelled trips booked to Italy since the coronavirus outbreak, the Italian Federation of Travel Companies and Tourism (Fiavet) said on Wednesday.
