Kashmir continues to be in grip of cold wave

Srinagar, Jan 27 (SocialNews.XYZ) Temperatures have seen a major drop as Kashmir continues to be in the grip of severe cold wave. On Sunday night temperature in Srinagar was -0.6 degree Celsius and it was -10.2 degree Celsius in Pahalgam and -10.4 degrees C in Gulmarg.

The weatherman has forecast more snow on January 28 and 29.

"There will be a fresh spell of snow due to western disturbance on January 28 and 29," Sonum Lotus, director of Met department, Kashmir, told IANS.

She said that there will be some respite from the harsh cold wave conditions by the end of this month.

The fresh phase of winter in Kashmir known as 'chillai kalan' will end of January 31. The 40-day long 'chillai kalan' is the harshest part of the winter in Kashmir in which temperatures drop to sub-zero level.

The chilly weather conditions have added to the problems of the people in the Valley.

"For the last two winters we have seen extreme cold and snow. This has brought lots of hardship to the people," Abdul Rahim, a resident of Srinagar said.

There have been several rounds of snowfall this year causing disruptions and blocking the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, the main road link between Kashmir and the rest of the country.

The highway however is open on Monday for one-way traffic from Srinagar to Jammu.
