There might be a sequel of ‘Mamangam’ says Mammootty

Veteran Malayalam actor Mammootty, who next will be in a film titled ‘Mamangam’, has hinted that makers of the film might make a sequel of historical-period action film as it’s a part of a vast history.

Mammootty was interacting with the media at the trailer launch of ‘Mamangam’ along with his co-actors Prachi Tehlan, Unni Mukundan and Iniya, film’s director M. Padmakumar, stunt director Sham Kaushal on Wednesday in Mumbai.

People from other parts of the country don’t know much about story of ‘Mamangam’, when asked Mammootty what made them to make a film on such untold epic story from History, he said, “This not actually an untold story. It’s just that it hasn’t been shown in a film format.  Many people have written about it in many ways so, if you go through history or read books related to its story, you will definitely know more about it. You can not only make one film but you can make minimum ten to fifteen films out of it. It’s such a vast history. I don’t know but we might make one more film from this story. It continued for three centuries so, you can imagine it.”

‘Mamangam’ is about the Mamankam festival of the 18th century in the banks of the Bharathappuzha at Tirunavaya, in the Malabar region. The film follows the story of warriors known as Chaaverukal who plots against the Zamorin rules to overthrow them.

‘Mamangam’ is touted as one of the most expensive films made in Malayalam film industry, talking about the film, Mammootty, said, “I have been doing films in Malayalam. I did 2-3 films in Hindi film industry as well but I could not continue for various reasons. I wanted that this film should be seen by non-Malayali audience too so, we have translated this film into all the South-Indian languages and in Hindi. The effort behind it was to reach wider audience. It’s a story of brave warrior. There are not only elements of love, romance and betrayal but there is a philosophy behind this film which I don’t want to disclose at this moment. There are a lot of contemporary issues shown in the film and audience can relate with it so, it’s a special film for me.”

When asked Mammootty whether he feels that it is his responsibility as an artist to bring something which has happened in the past to the audience, he said, “It happened before British came to India. It may be one of the first invasions in the country. I think Portuguese people were there when it happened but it continued for two to three centuries. It started from 15th century to 18th Century so, I feel it’s an unique story because it is something which never happened in any part of the world. I don’t want to explain more about it because some things should be kept hidden before you (audience) watch it.”

When asked Mammootty what kind of challenges he faced as an actor while making this film, he said,  “An actor always faces challenges in every film. I think we are always challenged.”

Mammootty started his career as a lawyer but then he turned in actor to act in films, when asked him whether he misses being a lawyer, he said, “I don’t miss those days when I used to be a lawyer but I am still aware of what is happening around me. I preferred to be an actor that’s why I came here so, I should not miss being a lawyer.”

There are many Hindi and South-Indian films are breaking the boundaries in terms of its country-wide release be it films like ‘Baahubali’, ‘K.G.F: Chapter 1’, ‘2.0’ ‘Dabangg 3’ and many others, when asked Mammootty what he feels about this scenario, he said, “We are getting united again and we are getting stronger.”

Reacting on gruesome rape and murder case of a veterinary doctor from Shamshabad in Hyderabad, Mammooty, said, “Society should be conscious about it. We should change our conscience. We should think that what are we and why are we doing all this. Everybody is concerned about what is happening to us and that includes me as well.”

‘Mamangam’ was originally shot in Malayalam and it will be dubbed in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi and the movie will be released simultaneously.

It is scheduled to be released world-wide on 12 December, 2019.
