A year and a half after it parted ways with the BJP, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) is increasingly adopting a communal tone, generally seen as the preserve of its former ally, in a bid to corner “the Christian Chief Minister” Jagan Mohan Reddy and portray him as being anti-Hindu.

Analysts say the TDP is more proactive than the BJP in Andhra Pradesh in raking up matters of Hindu faith — something Chandrababu Naidu’s party was not identified with even when it was in an alliance with the BJP — and see this as Naidu’s manoeuvre to reunite with his estranged ally.
