EC’s compilation error creates confusion in Kolkata South

EC's compilation error creates confusion in Kolkata South
Kolkata, May 23 IANS) The Election Commission's error in compilation of votes during counting process in the Kolkata South Lok Sabha constituency created confusion on Thursday, prompting BJP's candidate Chandra Kumar Bose to lodge a complaint over the discrepancy in figures.

"At 1.45 p.m., the Election Commission's website reflected total votes of 14,90,235. How can it exceed the total polled votes of 11,97,855? We demand a re-poll and recounting," Bose told reporters.

As per the EC's report, 69.65 per cent voting took place in South Kolkata constituency accounting to 11,97,855 polled votes but Thursday's figure showed a huge discrepancy.

Citing the difference between the two figures, Bose said: "The polling in Kolkata South shows a clear discrepancy in voter's turnout and the total counted votes. The attached letter and screenshots show clear rigging of polls in Dakshin Kolkata."

However, as per sources in Election Commission, around noon the lead taken by Trinamool Congress candidate Mala Roy was shown to be 4,23,471 votes but the actual figure was 1,55,102 - which led to confusion.

"This was completely a typographical human error leading to the wrong compilation," the official said.
